CEU Advances Intellectual Property Knowledge Through Patent and Innovation Workshop

13 August 2024

The Research and Innovation Department (RID) recently concluded a comprehensive three-day training session on Patents and Innovation to deepen the participants' understanding of Intellectual Property (IP) rights and the patent process.

Faculty members and students from the School of Optometry, particularly those with potential patent-eligible research outputs, attended the event. Additionally, research advisers supervising student projects with patent potential also participated.

The first day of the workshop featured prominent speakers and experts from the Department of Science and Technology - Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI). Mr. Roberto R. Versoza, a senior research specialist at DOST-TAPI, introduced the fundamentals of IP rights and basic patent drafting. Mrs. Anna Liza B. Saet provided an in-depth overview of the DOST-TAPI assistance program and guided participants through prior art search techniques. Both speakers also conducted consultation sessions with authors to assess the patentability of their inventions.

The second and third days were led by experts from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). Engineer Eric Paden, an Intellectual Property Rights Specialist IV at IPOPHL, discussed the criteria for patentability and introduced patent drafting. Engineer Emmanuel Mendoza elaborated on drafting patent specifications and the processes for drawing, patent granting, and registration of utility models and industrial designs. Participants also learned how to draft patent claims and engaged in consultation meetings with IPOPHL speakers and facilitators.

The workshop culminated in the identification of six patentable products and technologies, derived from both student and faculty research outputs. The patent claims for these products and technologies are then sent to DOST-TAPI for assistance with the patenting process.

This training session marks a significant step towards fostering innovation and protecting intellectual property in the University. By equipping researchers and students with the knowledge and skills to navigate the patent process, RID led by VP Dr. Erna Yabut and Dr. Josephine De Leon ad Head, aims to promote the development of innovative solutions and contribute to the advancement of science and technology.
