CEU Lady Scorpions Seals 11th Consecutive Title in WNCAA

21 December 2023

Centro Escolar University Basketball Team secured its 11th consecutive championship title in the 54th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) after its 68-46 victory over the San Beda Red Lioness during their Sunday showdown at Chiang Kai Shek College.

The star of the championship game was none other than CEU Lady Scorpion shooting guard Krizzyann Bautista, who earned the Finals MVP honors, contributing 23 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

Speaking about the team's journey, Bautista emphasized the sacrifices made, stating, “S’yempre sobrang dami naming pinaghirapan. 5 AM trainings, puro weights tapos puro work hard” ("Of course, we worked really hard. 5 AM trainings, mostly focused on weights, and a lot of hard work"). This commitment to early morning practices and grueling training sessions laid the foundation for the team's success.

The CEU Lady Scorpions maintained a consistent lead throughout the game, particularly dominating in the third quarter. Their strategic plays and cohesive teamwork left the San Beda Red Lioness struggling to keep pace.

In recognition of their outstanding performances throughout the season, several CEU-WBT players earned spots on the season’s Mythical Five. Alongside Finals MVP Krizzyann Bautista, the honorees included Hannah Mae Gumapo, Jessica Mahusay, Diane Defeles, and Jacerylle Anne Britania. In addition to her Mythical Five selection, Gumapo was named the season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), a testament to her consistent excellence on the court.

The CEU Lady Scorpions showcased their prowess not only on the basketball court but also on the volleyball court. The volleyball squad claimed the championship title at St. Scholastica’s College Manila after a clash with the Philippine Women’s University Lady Patriots. The CEU Women’s Volleyball Team emerged victorious with a 3-1 set domination (25-15, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20).

Leading the Mythical Six honorees for the CEU-WVT were Danielle Fugen, recognized as the Best Libero and Most Valuable Player, Heart Franchesca Pila as Best Blocker, and Zoe Hannah Pacure as Best Server. Fugen, who played a pivotal role in the team's success, expressed her elation, stating, “All our hard work has paid off now that we reclaimed the champion spot.”

CEU's dual triumph in both women's basketball and volleyball is a testament to the comprehensive excellence and dedication to the athletic program. As the Lady Scorpions bask in the glory of their achievements, the entire CEU community shares in the pride of these remarkable victories, marking a historic chapter in the school's rich sports legacy.
