CEU University Convocation 2021 Addresses Social Media Impact on Human Behavior and Society
Centro Escolar University Presidential Committee on Culture and the Arts (PCCA) initiated this year’s University Convocation which is also in celebration of the 114th Foundation Anniversary of CEU with a discussion of a very fitting and significant topic of social media’s impact on human behavior and society livestreamed via Facebook and Youtube.
Two very eloquent and brilliant speakers discussed the topics in a very substantial and engaging manner.
Prof. Richard Heydarian, International Political Analyst, Professorial Chairholder in Geopolitics at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines discussed significant points about fake news or disinformation on social media and how it affects one’s political and societal point-of-views. He emphasized that apart from the issue of disinformation, the other problem is having the wrong idea of what kind of leaders are needed, especially in the 21st century. “In the 21st century, we need leaders who believe in and enable strong institutions rather than strong men”, said Prof. Heydarian.
Dr. Jayeel Cornello, Director, Development Studies Program of the Ateneo De Manila University explained how this generation of young people behave on social media and how these behaviors affect the country’s social and political state. He presented results of surveys on the past election which appeared to be different from what it seems to be in the social media. What the majority of the youth supports in the social media was not reflected in the actual voting results. Dr. Cornello said that this means that the online voice is not always the offline voice, and there is no one youth vote.
His talk was followed by a very engaging open forum where he answered questions from the virtual audience and from the event host himself, Mr. Eduard Riparip. He even left a message cum advice to all the Escolarian students.
“You are in the position where not many Filipino youth have access to university education. Therefore, take advantage of the relationship that you have with one another and with your professors; talk with them, ask questions and seek help advice from them. Let us learn from one another,” said Dr. Cornello.
CEU Singers, CEU Folk Dance Troupe and CEU Concert Band also performed in between parts of the program.
This annual event by the CEU PCCA was spearheaded by Dr. Carlito Olaer, Vice President for Student Affairs and Prof. Angelito Ayran Jr., Head of the CEU Conservatory of Music.
