CEU’s Janine Pontejos as Women’s Basketball Game Changer

26 July 2021

Centro Escolar University alumna Janine Pontejos has really established a name for herself. After bringing pride to the Philippines with her winning games in several international sports competitions, she once again made a noise for making the women’s basketball recognized more in the country.

In her recent interview with Ms. Bea Daez on Samahang Basketball Pilipinas (SBP) Women in Charge Episode 4, Janine took a trip down the past years starting from playing basketball on the streets with her cousins and friends at the age of 8 in her home town in Batangas to becoming 4-time MVP for WNCAA and NAASCU during her college days in CEU, and up to her becoming one of today’s outstanding athletes in the country for women’s basketball.

Being a sharp shooter made her stood out among the rest, and this resulted in her basketball career to flourish. She said patience, “utak” and “diskarte” are her magic tricks inside the court.

In 2018, the Philippine sports community celebrated Janine’s victory as the first Filipino gold medalist in the FIBA 3x3 Mixed Competition Shootout. In 2019, she once again brought home a gold medal, both for 3x3 and 5 versus 5 tournaments in the Southeast Asian Games.  With these achievements, little by little, she paved the way for the women’s basketball to gain more recognition. Janine expressed how happy she is that with this recognition, the talents and skills of the young athletes will not be put to waste.

At the age of 28, Janine hopes to continue her passion and love for sports. She is the present Assistant Coach of the CEU Lady Scorpions Team, and the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s Basketball Team 2-point Specialist.  Aside from being active in the court, she also serves in the Philippine Army.
