School of Optometry

Established in 1928, the School of Optometry has produced highly trained, technically skilled, and globally competitive optometrists who are fully capable of delivering the full spectrum of optometric services in primary health care.

 

Known as the Home of Board Topnotchers, the School has continuously evolved to become the premier School of Optometry in the Philippines. Its academic program is progressive and is characterized by competitive faculty, the most modern clinical and laboratory facilities, comprehensive clinical/hospital externship program, and an intensive community outreach service. Moreover, the program includes not only academic but also co-curricular and extra-curricular activities which help develop students to become global leaders in their future profession and independent thinkers cognizant of their crucial role in primary eye care.

DOCTOR OF OPTOMETRY

PROGRAM OUTCOME

  • Correlate the concept & principles in ocular, medical & Visual sciences in the professional
  • Execute quality eye and vision care through comprehensive and appropriate examination, measurement, assessment and diagnosis of ocular, visual and related systemic conditions
  • Create treatment and management plan for ocular, visual & related systemic conditions.
  • Practice the highest professional and ethical standards in the practice of optometry.
  • Develop vision and eye care program in response to health care needs of the community & other sector.
  • Collaborate in lifelong learning and continuing professional growth.
  • Produce research and clinical studies which will contribute to the advancement of optometry and improve the quality of life

  • Private Practice - Owning and operating an individual private practice and providing direct patient care.
  • Group Practice - Working in a partnership or group practice with two or more ODs.
  • Retail/Optical Setting  - Practicing as an independent practitioner in a retail or optical setting such as IVC, EO.
  • Corporate / Industrial - Working in a corporate setting to perform clinical research, develop eye-related products, or provide patient care within a clinic.
  • Military Optometry - Joining the military as an officer and providing eye care in a branch of the armed forces. 
  • Public Health/ Hospitals/ Interdisciplinary Care - Working with other health care practitioners to provide interdisciplinary care in a hospital, community health center, or a clinical setting.

  • Optometric / Ophthalmologic Professional Settings - Working in a setting with an ophthalmologist to co-manage patients.

    GDLSC Bldg. Ground Floor
    This is the main clinic facility for the provision of actual clinical experience to student clinicians. It has 20 clinic modules to cater the growing number of student clinicians. Each module is fully equipped with up to date ophthalmic equipment and instruments donated by our industry partners to deliver the full spectrum of vision and eye care services.

 

  • Essilor Sight Center
    GDLSC Bldg. 2nd Floor  
    A newly open clinic facility donated by Essilor Philippines. It has four clinic modules which are completely equipped with state of the art ophthalmic instruments and equipment. This is where patients for ophthalmologic consultation are being assessed. This center has conference area where discussion of challenging clinical cases are being conducted.  

 

  • Optometry Specialty Clinic 
    GDLSC Bldg. Rm. 206 
    This is the clinic facility for Specialty Field of Optometry such as Clinical Low Vision and Rehabilitation, Sports Vision, Clinical Neuro-Optometry, Vision Therapy, Specialty Contact Fitting. It has 4 refracting units with LCD projectors. It has complete sets of low vision materials for thorough examination of patients with moderate to severe vision impairments. This clinic facility has a wide range of vision therapy materials sufficient to properly deliver vision therapy sessions 

 

  • Ophthalmic Laboratory (OphLab)
    GDLSC Bldg. Rm. 210 
    This facility is specially designed to meet the requirement of the Ophthalmic class laboratory and Ocular Prosthetics Laboratory. The room contains a lensometer, edging machines, lens blanks, and other instruments and equipment used for edging, polishing & finishing ophthalmic lenses.
