Centro Escolar University School of Medical Technology sophomore students presented their study titled “On the Separation of the Church and State: Is the Church's Opposition on the Anti-Terrorism Law in the Philippines a Case on Point” in the recent Lukad Conference 2020 which was hosted by the Philippine Normal University South Luzon.
The study tried to identify the extent of the separation between the church and state. Specifically, it focused on determining whether the church went overboard in criticizing the fast-tracked passing of the Anti-Terror Law as stated in the pastoral letter released by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).
“The team found the topic on the separation of the church and the state intriguing due to the church's criticisms on the passing of the Anti-Terror Law, which some alleged that the Catholic Church has become political. Maria Angeline Santos represented the group for the actual presentation of their pre-recorded video. Other members of the team were Carlos Angelo Panuelo, Renee Angelie Parale, Angela Pasicolan, and Patricia Salazar.
Santos excellently answered all questions, and received positive feedback for their paper, amidst intimidation of other presenters, who were already professionals and graduate school students.
The group was extremely delighted that their study was successfully accepted for oral presentation at the Lukad Conference 2020 although it was initially just a requirement for their subject, Man, Church and Society under Mr. Ruel Nalam, their professor, who earnestly supported the submission of their paper to the said virtual conference.
